What Is Insulation?

Insulation is the loose celled material used in various parts of a structure to help slow the transfer of heat into or out of your home.

It is rated by it's Resistance value or R-value.  The higher the R-value, the more effective the insulation is at stopping the transfer of heat.  The amount of insulation should be determined by it's R-value, not by any amount of inches.

According to Xcel Energy, as much as 70 percent of the energy you pay for is used to heat and cool your home. A properly insulated and air sealed home results in lower heating and cooling bills, can increase the value of your home in a selling market and provide overall comfort by eliminating drafts and deadening loud noises in and outside of the home.

Let's talk types of insulation...

Batted Wall Insulation
Batted Insulation
Batt Insulation:
♦ insulation strips made of flexible fiber glass. Most strips are 4 to 8 feet in length and made to fit between joists, beams and studs. Main uses are in the attic, floor, walls and cathedral ceilings.

Blown Fiber Glass Insulation
Blown Fiber Glass Insulation
Loose Fill Insulation:
♦ is made with small particles of materials like fiber glass or cellulose. The material is loosely packed in a bag and then blown into cavities with a machine. Main uses are in attics, floors, walls and various hard to reach closed spaces.

Rigid Insulation
Rigid Insulation
Rigid Insulation:
♦  is a rigid board made from fibrous material or plastic foams that are cut 24"-28" wide and vary in thickness.  Mainly used under the foundation slab and/or the exterior and interior foundation walls.

Closed Cell Insulation
Closed - Cell Foam Insulation
Closed-Cell Foam Insulation:
♦  Closed-cell  foam has many tiny foam cells closed and packed together. These cells are filled with a gas that helps the foam rise and expand and become a greater insulator.  Mainly used in boxsills, crawlspaces and air sealing.
